About Samuel Stephen
Historical fiction about power, institutions and the quiet mechanics of collapse.
The work
Samuel Stephen writes long-form fiction examining how records, institutions and power shape ordinary lives. The novels move through different historical worlds, but the central concern remains constant: what happens when people are forced to live inside systems they did not design.
The Blank Roll is the clearest starting point. It takes the Peasants’ Revolt away from spectacle and returns it to doors, tables, handwriting, household fear and the moral cost of being useful to authority.
The method
The work is built on evidence, but written for readers. History is not treated as costume. It is treated as pressure: material, social, administrative and human.
